Davis, John Carlyle, composer; b. Cincinnati, Ohio, March 31, 1878; d. Wyoming, Ohio, July 17, 1948. ASCAP 1925. Educ: Cincinnati pub­lic schools; Cincinnati College of Mu­sic (Springer Gold Medal); Harvard Univ. Brief career as newspaper re­porter Cincinnati Post. Founded, and directed Wyoming Institute of Mu­sical Art when ill health forced him to stop newspaper career. Organist and choirmaster Hartwell Presby­terian Church 1904-08, Wyoming Presbyterian Church 1908-15; Avon-dale Methodist Church 1915-17. Gave lectures on musical subjects; invented and obtained patents on improve­ments on piano and electric action pipe organ. Wrote poetry and short stories, also thesis, Gravity is a Func­tion of Light. Works: Violin Con­certo; Prairie Song (one movement); Sonata in D\> Major; About the World Suite; Three Dances for Orch.
